Am I A Candidate For Sedation Dentistry?

To be eligible for treatment under intravenous sedation, patients must be in good general health.

As a rule, sedation dentistry is most appropriate for patients who are highly anxious or even phobic of dental treatments, rather than those who are simply time poor.

At Smile Solutions every patient requesting this option will first undergo a pre-sedation assessment by our IV sedation dentist.

Candidate for Sedation Dentistry

The pre-sedation assessment

This assessment records your medical history, blood pressure, weight and height, and body mass index (BMI). Patients who suffer from high blood pressure or fall into the overweight and obese categories on their BMI may be excluded from sedation dentistry treatment.

Then, with your dental history to hand, one of our clinicians will discuss with you any anxiety you may have and will explain the alternatives for treatment, which include:

  • proceeding with treatment using traditional pain relieving techniques, including topical anaesthetic, local anaesthetic or nitrous oxide (happy gas)
  • general anaesthetic treatment in a hospital.

Participating in this assessment constitutes informed consent.

If you do proceed with sedation, the process will be explained to you in detail at your consultation appointment, including giving you written guidelines for your preparation and recovery.
